Every year, the nonprofit United Spinal Association helps more than 5,000 people who have a spinal cord injury or disorder. Next week, its New York City chapter will be hosting its annual Mardi Gras themed fundraiser for the NYC Spinal Grant Program. This program helps fund opportunities and adaptive equipment for people with spinal cord injuries, to maximize their independence, according to the Association.

Some work that the United Spinal Association has recently done includes sending a delegation to Puerto Rico to Puerto Rico to provide relief to wheelchair users and other people with disabilities following Hurricane Maria. The delegation offered free repairs to mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs, lifters, ramps, and hand controls. The team also distributed supplies and care items, such as inverters to load wheelchairs, solar lamps, and medical equipment.
Its Arizona chapter also organized a ‘Roll on Arizona’s Capitol’ in January to advocate for legislation that would benefit all people living with disabilities, such as passing a bill that would require a minimum of wheelchair-accessible bathrooms in apartment buildings.
